About Mrs Gill

I hold a degree and PGCE in English and Drama, and have taught GCSE English across a range of exam boards, including AQA and Edexcel. Additionally, I have spent four years as Head of English, as well as working in Senior Leadership with a responsibility in teaching and learning. My early experience teaching English abroad broadened my understanding of different learners and approaches to education.

Teaching has always been my passion. My support can empower young people; I enable them to think critically and develop the way they communicate their views. I love helping students to explore texts and discover both fictional and real worlds, as well as seeing them grow in their understanding. I believe that the role of a teacher is to nurture and challenge the potential in every learner. I am committed to creating supportive, yet engaging lessons that inspire curiosity, build confidence and ensure that students reach their goals.

Many pupils find GCSE English Language and Literature challenging because success depends on more than simply understanding a text. The highest marks are awarded for analytical and evaluative skills, requiring students to explore a writer’s methods, interpret deeper meanings, and develop thoughtful arguments. This can feel overwhelming at first, particularly when faced with unfamiliar texts or complex exam questions. My approach is to break these skills down into clear, manageable steps, giving students precise structures and practical strategies for each question type. By showing them exactly what examiners are looking for, how to organise their ideas, and how to write perceptive responses, I help build both their skills and their confidence. With targeted guidance, regular practice, and a clear understanding of the assessment objectives, students can make significant progress and work towards the grades they are aiming for.

This same approach is equally valuable at Key Stage 3, where students begin to develop the same skills that will underpin their GCSE success. I help these younger students to understand these foundations and build their confidence. I help to improve attainment in the classroom but also ensure that students are well prepared for the demands of GCSE English, therefore making the transition to Key Stage 4 much smoother and far less daunting.
